Chris Van Zanten is a multi-disciplined Glass Artist who started his formal art education at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the mid 70's.
The past 16 years have been focussed in Art Glass; primarily architectural glass and hot glass. He has undertaken architectural glass commissions for a broad range of clientele in Canada and the U.S. Chris began his hot glass exploration in Corning, N.Y. in 1996. While there, he studied at several studios with various artists. This eventually led to the deeper involvement and exploration found in today's work.
After blowing glass and teaching in Merrickville, ON for three years, he set out to design and build his own hot glass studio.
Chris fired up his new O.S.C. GLASSWORKS in September, 2005. It is located between Pakenham and Arnprior; about a half hour drive west of Ottawa, ON, Canada. The nature of his work is evolutionary and designed to engage the beholder with a highly resolved moment of an age old dance with fire.
"Each time I look into the radiance of my 2100 degree glass furnace I find a new horizon. It has become the fire in my bones." - Chris VanZanten
About the hot glass class experience: "Besides being a passionate and gifted glass artist, Chris is a very experienced and inspiring teacher. Hot glass is thick and syrupy and working it is a physical experience as well as an intellectual challenge. Gravity is your ally and adversary. At the end of the day I felt mentally exhausted but exhilarated. And far from being fearful of the studio and its hot, sharp and pointy bits, I was eager for the opportunity to go back."
